Sofa Fabrics that are dry clean only products.
What can happen if I get these products cleaned with water?
We get asked this question all the time and the answer is always the same. Many years ago all the employees at Eco Steam Clean took a course on dry cleaning fabrics as we were going to incorporate dry cleaning into our business model. There seemed to be a market for it and we thought why not!
Firstly, let me begin by saying that our whole ethos is based around sustainability, the environment and eco-friendly cleaning products; gosh, were we in for a shock to the system! Dry cleaning methods use only highly toxic products like perchloroethylene, also known as tetrachloroethylene, which is a human carcinogen, according to the U.S. National Toxicology Program. And yes, all dry cleaning products have this chemical in them. I’m not here to bash dry cleaning products all I am saying is that after that course we realized that the dry cleaning route was just not for us. It was quite a few years ago now and I can remember that the cost of the course was quite expensive. Lesson learned? most certainly.
Ok, now let me tell you what happens if you use hot or cold water on these two fabrics above. Firstly, they can lose their shine & softness of the nap; they can become quite dull and flat with no nap.
Secondly, they can lose their shape, have you ever washed the cushions on a sofa in the washing machine then tried to put them back on the cushions lol, That’s impossible? well, that’s nothing compared to dry cleaning fabrics being washed.
Finally, the fabrics cab lose their durability; suddenly that expensive fabric on your beloved sofa is thinner and not as strong as before.
Hopefully this has helped you in your search for the dangers of washing dry cleaning fabrics.
